On the island, luckily, there exist artists and different creators. Some are in the caste of severe representative figuration and others under the platform of the concept. Few succeed in experiencing and expressing the relationship between art and freedom. Giuseppe Livio is one of the unpredictable free ones, lit up by an inextinguishable fire that makes him produce audacious signs in visionary painting and also gestures of principle and courage. For a long time the artist had had the idea of bringing the wind that blows around the Aeolian islands onto the mother island to contaminate and show those forms inspired by long stays on Vulcano, places in which life draws near to the natural extreme. “My intention,” says Giuseppe Livio, “is to show that a soul exists behind the artist, a soul that is transferred, if pure, into the works. My works enjoy themselves and at the same time find the way to communicate and sensitize.” From Giuseppe Livio’s painting we must not expect direct affinities. It is better to prepare for an oneiric journey in the circles of life that we easily forget, among excessive faces of men and animals and faces of women lit up in open and direct looks, alienating colours that persist, if we look carefully, in this world proposed and too often experienced with grey screens.
Half-measures don’t exist in the Transfer series. Every vision is handed over equal to its apparition, not filtered by the superstructures of castrating thought, but freed like creatures in nature and “exactly this is my way,” affirms Livio. “I am more and more convinced that everything that belongs to nature contains an example for us human beings. I don’t want to be away from the relationship between what is natural and my idiom anymore. I am not interested in representing. I only feel at ease if I succeed in keeping my eyes open.” […]
He is the symbol of the tameless artist that Sicily attends to like an apprehensive and proud mother, an artist that is visionary by birth and impossible to shut off in some artistic or critical enclosure, but lucid and aware about the human condition.
From the Aeolian islands the artist brings the reason of nature, which should belong again to human reason; art is its medium and its counterpoint. Once, not long ago, he said to me: “We are unwelcome guests of a fantastically perfect world, art will save the world, only if there are still residues of true humans.”
Sull'Isola esistono, per fortuna, artisti e creatori differenti, alcuni stanno dentro la casta della severa figurazione rappresentativa altri sotto il palco del concetto, pochi riescono a vivere ed esprimere la relazione tra arte e libertà. Giuseppe Livio rientra tra i liberi imprevedibili, accesso da un fuoco inestinguibile che gli fa compiere segni audaci dentro una pittura visionaria e anche gesti di principio e di coraggio. Da tempo l'artista aveva in cuore di portare il vento che soffia intorno alle isole Eolie sulla isola madre per contaminare e mostrare quelle forme ispirate da lunghe permanenze su Vulcano, luoghi nei quali la vita si avvicina all'estremo naturale. “La mia intenzione - racconta Giuseppe Livio - è quella di far vedere che esiste un'anima dietro l'artista, anima che si trasferisce, se pura, nelle opere, i miei lavori mi divertono e al contempo trovano la via per comunicare e sensibilizzare». Dalla pittura di Giuseppe Livio non bisogna aspettarsi affinità dirette, meglio predisporsi ad un viaggio onirico dentro i gironi della vita che facilmente dimentichiamo, tra volti eccessivi di uomini e animali e visi di donne accesi in sguardi aperti e diretti, colori estranianti che persistono, a ben guardare, in questo mondo proposto troppo spesso vissuto con schermate a toni di grigio.
Non esistono mezze misure nella serie Transfer, ogni visione è consegnata uguale alla sua apparizione, non filtrata dalle sovrastrutture di un pensiero castrante, ma liberate come creature nella natura ed «è esattamente quella la mia strada - afferma Livio - sono sempre più convinto che tutto quello che appartiene alla natura racchiude l'esempio per noi esseri umani, non voglio più stare lontano dalla relazione tra ciò che è naturale e il mio linguaggio, non sono interessato a rappresentare, mi sento a mio agio solo se riesco a tenere gli occhi aperti”. Lui è il simbolo dell'artista indomabile che la Sicilia accudisce come una madre apprensiva e fiera, visionario per nascita e impossibile da chiudere in qualche recinto artistico o critico, ma lucido e consapevole sulla condizione umana.
Dalle Isole Eolie l'artista porta la ragione della natura che dovrebbe far di nuovo parte della ragione umana, l'arte è il suo mezzo e il suo contrappunto. Una volta, poco tempo fa, mi disse così: «Siamo ospiti non graditi di un mondo fantasticamente perfetto, l'arte salverà il mondo, soltanto se ci saranno ancora residui di umani veri”.
